30. Ramnath Kovind will head Panel On . One Nation, One Election
- The Union government has established a committee, led by former Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, to examine the viability of holding State Assembly and Lok Sabha elections simultaneously.
- Following the government's announcement that a special parliamentary session will be held from September 18 to September 22nd, 2023, this development has raised questions regarding the session's aim.
- The idea of "One Nation, One Election" aims to time the Lok Sabha (the lower chamber of the Indian Parliament) election with those for all state assemblies. The main goal is to hold all of these elections at once, either on the same day or at the same time.
- In India, holding elections concurrently was customary up until 1967; four elections were conducted in this manner. After certain state assemblies were prematurely dissolved in 1968–1969, the practice was abandoned. In 1970, the Lok Sabha was dissolved for the first time a year early, and mid-term elections were conducted in 1971.
